EU subjects ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox to stricter digital oversight
The European Commission has officially classified ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines, mandating rigorous new oversight. Under the Digital Services Act, these services must now confront strict limitations on data usage and algorithmic transparency to protect minors and curb the spread of illicit content.

This regulatory shift forces the companies to overhaul how they interact with European users. The Digital Services Act prohibits these platforms from leveraging sensitive personal data—such as political beliefs, sexual orientation, or ethnicity—for targeted advertising. Furthermore, they are now required to provide clear insights into the mechanics of their recommendation algorithms.
Designation as a "Very Large" entity is triggered by reaching a threshold of 45 million average monthly users within the EU. While the regulatory burden is immediate, the companies have been granted a grace period until the end of December 2026 to achieve full compliance. Henna Virkkunen, the EU executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy, stated that these measures ensure the platforms meet a higher standard of scrutiny in proportion to their significant societal impact.
