Xi Jinping Arrives in Bishkek for SCO Summit and State Visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down in Bishkek on Sunday, marking the start of a visit aimed at cementing a new era of cooperation. Welcomed by President Sadyr Japarov with elaborate traditional ceremonies, Xi characterized the current state of China-Kyrgyzstan relations as a golden period of rapid development.

The high-profile reception at Manas International Airport featured an honor guard on horseback, traditional komuz performances, and displays of eagle hunting, reflecting the importance Bishkek places on the summit. This visit coincides with the 35th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan’s independence, a symbolic milestone that observers note highlights the depth of the bilateral partnership.
Economic ties remain the bedrock of the relationship, with China maintaining its position as Kyrgyzstan’s largest trading partner and primary source of foreign investment. Trade between the two nations reached $11.7 billion in the first seven months of 2026, driven by a surge in exports of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic technology. Beyond trade, the two leaders are expected to finalize a blueprint for future infrastructure projects, most notably the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, which aims to improve connectivity for the landlocked nation.
While trade dominates the agenda, the scope of cooperation is expanding toward the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and green development. Experts suggest the discussions in Bishkek will move beyond traditional exchange to address long-term integration into the global economy. As the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit begins, the focus remains on leveraging these bilateral successes to strengthen multilateral stability across Central Asia.
