Sonos pivots to AI-driven audio with new hardware and software suite
In a bid to move past recent software controversies, Sonos unveiled the Beam Ultra soundbar and Ace Ultra headphones at a New York City event. The launch anchors a broader strategic shift toward the Sonos 27 operating system, which integrates proprietary voice controls and extensive third-party AI model support.
The company is betting heavily on artificial intelligence to redefine user interaction. The new Sonos 27 voice assistant handles core music and system commands, arriving as an opt-in feature this autumn. Beyond native tools, the Sonos 27mcp platform—launching in early access on September 8th—allows users to bridge existing AI models like ChatGPT or Google Gemini directly into their home audio environment.
Long-term development plans include the ability to create up to 10 personalized AI agents. According to Brandon Holley, senior director of product development, these agents can be assigned distinct personas, ranging from a news-delivering detective to a motivational coach. While these custom agents remain slated for a 2027 release, the company is already pushing immediate updates, including an 8-band equalizer for the Ace Ultra headphones, to regain user trust after a tumultuous year.
