A Quarter-Century Later: The 9/11 Heroes Run Unites New Generations
Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, a generation has emerged with no personal recollection of the day. This September, more than 60,000 participants across 100 communities will bridge that gap through the Travis Manion Foundation’s 19th annual 9/11 Heroes Run, transforming collective memory into active public service.
The race series, which kicks off September 5 and runs through October, honors both the first responders of 2001 and the military personnel who served in the ensuing conflicts. Supported by national title sponsor CVS Health, the events invite participants to walk, run, or ruck, creating a physical space for veterans and civilians to interact with younger Americans who only know the history through oral tradition.
Ryan Manion, CEO of the Travis Manion Foundation, emphasized that the anniversary represents a duty rather than a passive promise. The foundation traces its roots to 1stLt Travis Manion, who was killed in Iraq in 2007. Inspired by a pre-deployment visit to FDNY Rescue Company 1, he sought to honor the courage of first responders. Following his death, the inaugural run was held in his hometown of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 2008. Today, the initiative serves as a cornerstone for the foundation's broader mission of leadership development and veteran support.
