Rice University reaches record enrollment amid campus expansion

The university received over 38,000 applications for the fall 2026 semester, marking a 5% increase from the previous year and significantly outpacing growth rates among similar private institutions. Total enrollment, including graduate students, has now climbed to nearly 9,200. President Reginald DesRoches noted that this growth is intentional, aimed at broadening the school’s global impact without diluting the quality of instruction or the university’s 6-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.

To support this expansion, the university is executing a massive capital improvement program. Recent additions include two new residential colleges, the Asha and Farid Virani Hall for business studies, and the Ralph S. O'Connor Building for Engineering and Science. Upcoming projects, such as the AI-focused research hub known as The Arc, signal a push to deepen the university's footprint in both technology and global research. Parallel to these physical developments, the school has overhauled its financial aid structure, promising free tuition for families earning under $200,000 annually starting in 2027 to ensure that accessibility keeps pace with its physical growth.
