Google updates Android to track physical items via Gemini
Instead of relying on Bluetooth tags, Android users will soon leverage Gemini’s memory to locate misplaced household items. The feature, part of a broader software update, allows the AI to store the location and visual context of specific objects, effectively turning the phone into a digital memory bank for physical belongings.
This functionality within the Find Hub expands the utility of Google’s AI by letting users save the whereabouts of infrequently used items, such as passports or documents. By providing Gemini with a photo and a descriptive tag, the system creates a searchable record accessible through the Find Hub interface. The update is slated for devices running Android 16 or later in regions where the AI suite is currently supported.
Beyond item tracking, the update introduces Motion Assist to mitigate motion sickness by displaying responsive visual cues on the screen, mirroring functionality found in competitors' ecosystems. Accessibility also receives a boost through Guided Vision, which utilizes the camera and Gemini Live to read labels or locate specific pantry items, offering voice-guided framing adjustments for users. These tools, alongside new customizable chat themes for Google Messages, will roll out to devices running Android 9 and above.
