Catalight Wellbeing Scale Validated for Families in Turkey
A 15-item questionnaire designed to track the quality of life for families of children with developmental disabilities has proven effective beyond the United States. New research confirms that the Catalight Family Wellbeing Scale remains reliable when adapted for Turkish caregivers, marking a significant step toward broader global clinical application.

The study, published in Family Relations, involved over 300 primary caregivers in Turkey. Researchers from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Bartin University translated the instrument to evaluate whether its core metrics—family relationships, management, and determination—held up across different cultural dynamics. The results mirrored the original U.S. findings, showing consistent internal reliability and strong correlations with existing measures of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Lindsey Sneed, a co-developer of the scale and vice president of clinical excellence at Catalight, noted that the team initially questioned whether language barriers or differing cultural definitions of wellbeing might impede the tool's effectiveness. However, the data confirmed that the scale provides a stable, comparable metric regardless of which parent completes the assessment. Following this validation, Catalight is expanding its translation efforts to increase accessibility, while simultaneously working with Istanbul University to validate a separate Parental Stress Scale for families navigating intellectual and developmental disabilities.
