Apple Maps rebrands Lake Ontario as Lake America

While domestic users see the new designation, the naming discrepancy remains fragmented across platforms. Canadian versions of Apple Maps continue to display the traditional name, and international iterations currently feature both titles. This update follows a pattern established last year when both Apple and Google renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America under similar executive mandates.

Not all digital map providers have complied with the directive. MapQuest has notably refused to adopt the changes, a stance that has coincided with a surge in its popularity, pushing the app to the top of the Apple App Store rankings. Apple’s decision to implement the change arrives after a period of hesitation, trailing the speed at which Google updated its own Geographic Names Information System data.
