Climate Crisis Makes Deadly Heatwaves 35 Times More Likely
A brutal heat dome stretching from Nevada to Honduras has exposed a lethal new normal, with researchers confirming that human-driven climate change has made such extreme temperature spikes 35 times more probable. The findings highlight an accelerating trend of record-breaking heat that is increasingly outpacing global disaster preparedness.

Scientists at World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that the May and June heatwave, which triggered at least 35 deaths in Mexico alone, was fundamentally altered by fossil fuel emissions. While daytime maximums are now 35 times more likely, the surge in nighttime temperatures—which are 200 times more probable—prevents the human body from recovering, as certain regions recorded night heat with return periods of up to 1,000 years.
Friederike Otto of Imperial College London blamed the persistence of these crises on political inaction regarding fossil fuel lobbying. The data arrives alongside reports from the Energy Institute showing that global fossil fuel consumption reached record highs in 2023, accounting for over 80% of the energy mix. This trend aligns with 12 consecutive months of record-breaking global heat, further evidenced by tragic fatalities during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
Beyond direct heatstroke, the climate instability exacerbated a severe drought in Mexico and may have prolonged a dengue outbreak in Latin America that claimed over 1,800 lives. Researchers warn that unless infrastructure is overhauled—through better grid systems, green spaces, and legislative protections for outdoor workers—these events will transition from rare anomalies to common occurrences in a world moving toward 2°C of warming.
