Calumet Secures EPA Exemption, Sheds $170 Million in RIN Liabilities

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted Calumet full exemptions on two small refinery petitions for the 2025 compliance year. This regulatory win allows the Indianapolis-based manufacturer to remove 71 million RINs from its balance sheet, a move valued at approximately $170 million as of June 30, 2026.

The company confirmed the EPA notification on August 31, providing immediate relief to its financial obligations. Despite this success, Calumet continues to navigate complex regulatory hurdles. A remaining liability of 129 million RINs—valued at roughly $309 million—persists on the company’s books. These figures relate to partial exemptions for the 2022-24 period, which remain under active discussion with federal regulators.

Beyond direct negotiations, these partial exemptions are currently subject to judicial review. The legal landscape remains crowded, as other industry participants have filed independent challenges against the EPA's stance. Calumet operates twelve facilities across North America, specializing in refined products and renewable fuels, and is currently managing these environmental liabilities as part of its broader strategy to stabilize its balance sheet.
