Tado Targets European Nest Users With Slim Smart Thermostat X
Following Google's retreat from the European thermostat market, German manufacturer Tado is positioning its new Smart Thermostat X as the definitive replacement for aging Nest hardware. With Google's long-term support for its remaining European devices appearing uncertain, Tado is aggressively courting displaced users through refreshed design and expanded connectivity.
The second-generation Smart Thermostat X arrives in wired and battery-powered configurations, the latter featuring USB-C recharging. At 17.8mm thick, the device adopts a minimalist white aesthetic intended to blend into home interiors, a shift from the company’s previous industrial black hardware. It supports boilers, heat pumps, and underfloor heating, utilizing Matter-over-Thread connectivity to improve communication range between the unit and boiler-side receivers.
Beyond hardware, Tado is expanding its software ecosystem. The company introduced multi-home management and achieved TÜV certification for its hydronic balancing system, which optimizes radiator heat distribution. This certification allows users in specific markets to qualify for government heat-pump subsidies. Advanced automation features, including geofencing and adaptive heating, remain locked behind the AI Assist subscription, priced at £29.99 annually.
To lower the barrier for skeptical Nest users, Tado is launching a performance-based guarantee. Cofounder Christian Deilmann claims the system saves customers hundreds of euros annually and is offering a full refund within the first 12 months if users feel the energy savings fail to meet expectations. The new hardware is available immediately through the company's website and select European retailers, with pricing starting at £159.99/€179.99.
