Nanochon Begins Human Trials for 3D-Printed Knee Cartilage Implant

A medical device startup has reached its first clinical milestone, successfully implanting a 3D-printed Chondrograft™ device into a patient at The Panama Clinic. This initial procedure marks the official launch of a first-in-human study designed to test the safety and efficacy of the novel regenerative treatment for knee cartilage defects.

Dr. Juan Osorio and Dr. Emilio Tufiño performed the surgery, focusing on patients who have exhausted conservative treatment options. The study targets individuals aged 22 to 60 suffering from femoral condyle or trochlear cartilage lesions. By utilizing a bone-sparing, minimally invasive approach, the company aims to offer a long-term solution that avoids the need for full joint replacement in younger patients.

"The procedure is bone-sparing, minimally invasive, and streamlined," said Dr. Tufiño, noting the efficiency of the dedicated instrumentation. For Nanochon, the data gathered in Panama serves as a crucial foundation for a future Level 1 multi-center pivotal trial. The company's technology has already secured Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, highlighting the industry's focus on finding durable alternatives to current orthopedic standards that often fail to restore fully functional tissue.
