Philips Hue Adds Natural Language Controls for Complex Automations

Until now, Hue users seeking advanced lighting logic often relied on third-party software because the native application struggled to visualize complex, conditional automations. George Yianni, head of technology at Philips Hue, clarified that the hardware has always been capable of these tasks, but the user interface simply could not handle the required complexity without becoming overwhelming. By allowing users to type commands—such as adjusting color temperatures based on wake or sleep states—the new assistant removes the need to manually configure every trigger point.

This functionality is restricted to those using the Bridge Pro, as the feature demands the specific processing power of that hardware. Beyond lighting, the update brings deeper integration with Sonos sound systems, enabling users to manage playback, volume, and playlists directly from Hue Tap Dial Switches. These features are slated for a wider software release this November, effectively turning the Hue app into a central control hub for both illumination and home audio.
