LiveU Joins Industry Effort to Standardize Story Context for AI
LiveU has joined the IBC Accelerator Smart Stories consortium to help develop the Story Object Model, an open standard designed to bridge the gap between field acquisition and automated production. By embedding editorial context directly into data, the initiative aims to allow AI tools to interpret stories without manual intervention.
The project addresses a persistent inefficiency in modern newsrooms: producers currently rely on manual metadata entry to guide production systems, a process that slows output and introduces errors. While existing standards like MOS facilitate basic data movement, they lack editorial intelligence. The Story Object Model (SOM) aims to change this by providing a shared, structured language that allows various tools—from ingest platforms to AI agents—to understand the narrative intent, status, and requirements of a story in real time.
Roy Hasson, VP of Product Marketing at LiveU, noted that as AI agents take on more production duties, they require the same contextual awareness that human producers have traditionally held. By integrating SOM into its ecosystem, LiveU intends to ensure that live feeds from the field carry sufficient context to trigger automated transcription, clip generation, and dispatch decisions. This shift toward a story-centric workflow is intended to keep editorial standards and compliance requirements consistent across the entire production chain.
The consortium, which includes major organizations such as the BBC, AP, Reuters, and NBCUniversal, plans to present a live end-to-end demonstration at IBC2026 in Amsterdam. Beyond the Smart Stories initiative, LiveU is also participating in a separate project focused on using open 5G network APIs to improve the reliability of broadcast transmissions. The company will showcase both developments at its stand during the conference, highlighting a broader push to move news production toward more automated, interoperable, and cloud-native architectures.
