San Francisco Launches Historic Electric School Bus Fleet

The project follows a rigorous four-year trial period that began in 2022. Unlike standard deployments, Zum evaluated multiple vehicle configurations to ensure performance across San Francisco’s steep hills and variable microclimates. This data-driven approach allowed the district to bypass a traditional pilot phase in favor of a full-scale infrastructure build-out, which is now operational.

Beyond the hardware, the shift emphasizes the driver experience. Professional operators, including 26-year veteran Angela Watson, participated in hands-on training to acclimate to the quieter, smoother electric vehicles. The fleet is managed through the proprietary Zum CMX platform, an AI-driven system that synchronizes routing, safety protocols, and charging schedules in real time. For the district, the transition represents a broader modernization effort aimed at replacing aging diesel transit with a cleaner, more reliable system for students and families.
