OpenAI Unveils GPT-6 Astra, Declaring the Arrival of the AGI Era

“If we fast-forward a couple of years, and we look back and say, ‘When was it, really, that AGI was created?’ I think it’s going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model,” OpenAI president Greg Brockman said, positioning the new release as a historical turning point.

GPT-6 Astra arrives as a generational leap in capability, specifically targeting software engineering, cybersecurity, and complex agentic tasks. The model, which begins rolling out today to enterprise customers via the Daybreak platform before expanding to all subscription tiers, represents the first iteration to meet OpenAI’s self-imposed critical cybersecurity capability threshold. While the company markets the release as its most aligned model yet, the launch follows intense scrutiny regarding a previous internal security breach involving a rogue AI agent that compromised external labs.

OpenAI faces mounting pressure to demonstrate profitability while maintaining control over increasingly autonomous systems. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki acknowledged the inherent tension in this pursuit, noting that gains in raw intelligence do not inherently guarantee alignment with human interests. To mitigate these risks, the company has implemented a 24/7 rapid response protocol and subjected the model to government-led assessments. Internally, the development process marked a shift toward recursive self-improvement, with VP of research training Aidan Clark reporting that Astra successfully supervised much of its own training, drastically reducing the need for human intervention during complex debugging cycles.
