The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) brought its nationwide tour to Maryland to spotlight how international exchange initiatives bolster the U.S. economy and foster diplomatic ties. During the celebration, Karen Ward and Carrie Linch from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recognized local employers who rely on the program to sustain seasonal operations.

By bringing international university students to live and work in the United States during their summer breaks, the Summer Work Travel program allows seasonal businesses to extend their peak periods by an average of 50 days. This expansion not only supports local tourism but also creates additional employment opportunities for American workers. Beyond the economic metrics, the initiative serves as a public diplomacy tool, connecting global students with local communities to build long-term international relationships.
