Roland is stepping into generative AI with Melody Flip, a new plugin designed for digital audio workstations. Unlike automated song generators that produce polished tracks from text prompts, this tool focuses on providing raw musical building blocks—melodies, chords, and drum patterns—to assist producers in their creative process.
The plugin offers approximately 250 Palettes categorized by genre, ranging from standard 80s disco to niche styles like Kawaii Future Bass. Users generate musical ideas by selecting genre, note density, BPM, and key, or by importing a reference track to guide the output. Because the tool outputs MIDI data rather than finished audio, it is intended to serve as a starting point for further manipulation within a DAW using external synthesizers.
Technically, Melody Flip avoids the "push button" approach seen in tools like Suno or Udio. The presets utilize general MIDI-style tones reminiscent of 90s gaming hardware, reinforcing the idea that the output is a structural sketch rather than a final product.
