Canadian Energy Metals eyes domestic supply with new alumina process

Canadian Energy Metals Corp. has successfully produced smelter-grade alumina from non-bauxite black shales, a milestone that could challenge the traditional Bayer Process. Following this technical breakthrough at its Thor Project in Saskatchewan, the company has officially launched a prefeasibility study to map out a path to commercial production.

The company’s testing indicates that alumina derived from its Thor Project precursors matches the purity levels of industry-standard bauxite-based feedstock. By successfully converting boehmite into Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA), the firm is moving toward a fully integrated North American supply chain, aiming to insulate the market from potential global supply disruptions.

Christopher Hopkins, CEO of Canadian Energy Metals, stated that the development is accelerating the company's transition from bench-scale testing to a more rigorous economic assessment. The ongoing prefeasibility study will define infrastructure requirements, estimate capital costs, and determine whether the project warrants a full feasibility study. This follows a Preliminary Economic Assessment filed in May 2026, which initially established the economic potential for high-purity alumina products extracted from the region's unique shale deposits.
