Congressional Aides Resist Federal Ownership of AI Firms

Sixty-three percent of congressional staffers oppose the federal government acquiring equity stakes in private artificial intelligence companies, according to a recent CNCT Capitol Pulse survey. The findings highlight a deep-seated resistance among legislative aides to expanding state influence into the rapidly evolving AI sector.

The survey results reveal a bipartisan wariness regarding direct government intervention in private technology markets. While the federal government currently holds stakes in industries like defense and housing finance, extending this model to AI faces significant pushback. Among Democratic respondents, 67 percent stated they strongly oppose such equity investments, a sentiment mirrored by 58 percent of Republican aides.

Demographic analysis shows that opposition is particularly concentrated among Democratic women and House staffers, with 68 percent in both categories expressing strong disapproval. Support for government ownership remains marginal across the board, with only 11 percent of Democrats and 9 percent of Republicans indicating strong support for federal intervention. Among younger aides under 30, the thin layer of support for government stakes leans toward Democratic staffers, who account for 72 percent of the affirmative responses in that age bracket. HillFaith, which released these findings, suggests that these attitudes will play a critical role in shaping how future AI policy is negotiated and drafted on Capitol Hill.
