Computer Graphics Veteran Dr. Xin Tong Joins Meshy as Chief Scientist
After a 25-year tenure at Microsoft Research Asia, Dr. Xin Tong has joined AI 3D firm Meshy to lead its research into interactive world-building. His appointment signals a shift for the startup as it pivots from generating isolated 3D assets to developing comprehensive, real-time digital environments.

Dr. Tong, who holds an h-index of 80 and over 21,000 citations, will spearhead Meshy’s long-term research strategy, focusing on multimodal foundation models. CEO Dr. Yuanming (Ethan) Hu emphasized that Tong’s expertise in geometry, reconstruction, and neural rendering is essential for creating systems capable of sustaining dynamic, interactive spaces. This transition is already underway with the public release of Mora, an architecture designed to unify spatial understanding with generative AI.
During his career, Dr. Tong was instrumental in integrating advanced graphics research into industrial platforms like Xbox and Windows. At Meshy, he intends to tackle the challenge of scaling unified models that maintain consistency across complex dynamics. This move follows Meshy’s recent $400 million Series B funding round, which valued the company at $1.5 billion, positioning it to compete at the intersection of professional-grade production tools and accessible creative software.
