Canada Nickel Taps Komatsu for $1.5 Billion Crawford Mine Fleet
Canada Nickel Company has selected Komatsu and its primary Canadian dealer, SMS Equipment, to outfit the Crawford Nickel Project with a massive mining fleet. The deal, valued at approximately C$1.5 billion over the project’s 40-year lifespan, aims to integrate advanced autonomous and electric haulage technology into the Timmins-based operation.

The agreement follows a competitive selection process involving four equipment vendors. Canada Nickel executives chose the partnership for its focus on automation, specifically citing the DISPATCH fleet management system and FrontRunner autonomous haul trucks. These tools are central to the company's strategy to maintain low-carbon production while managing the complexities of a large-scale extraction site.
Beyond basic logistics, the project will utilize trolley-assisted truck haulage to curb diesel consumption and CO2 emissions. This infrastructure is designed to bridge the gap toward fully battery-powered electric vehicles, which are expected to be available by the time the mine reaches full production capacity. Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel, noted that the collaboration is intended to de-risk the startup phase by leveraging SMS Equipment’s established track record in similar Canadian mining environments.
The two companies expect to finalize definitive agreements and fleet support contracts by the first quarter of 2027. This timeline aligns with the broader development schedule for Crawford, as the company pushes toward a formal construction decision later that same year. Financing arrangements for the fleet will involve the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to secure long-term operational stability in the region.
