Valve brings Half-Life: Alyx to ARM with new Steam Frame headset

Valve has launched the Steam Frame, a $1,059 virtual reality headset powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 3 chip. The device arrives with a native ARM64 port of Half-Life: Alyx, marking a technical departure from the high-end desktop hardware previously required to run the flagship title.

The transition to mobile silicon allows the game to run entirely on the headset without a tethered PC. Despite the hardware shift from traditional desktop graphics cards to smartphone-based architecture, the port retains full mod support and existing save files. Users can access community-created levels just as they would on a standard Windows environment.

While graphical fidelity sees minor adjustments, the experience avoids the stripped-down feel common in standalone VR titles. Valve spokesperson Kaci Aitchison confirmed that the performance stability stems from integrated eye-tracking cameras. By utilizing foveated rendering, the system concentrates computing power exclusively on the user’s focal point, bypassing the need to render the entire peripheral field at maximum resolution. This optimization bridge proved essential in bringing the demanding 2020 title to the Snapdragon platform.
