Delaware Breaks Ground on $669 Million Container Terminal

The new terminal represents a strategic effort to modernize Wilmington’s port infrastructure, nearly doubling the facility’s container handling capacity. Designed to accommodate vessels carrying up to 16,000 TEUs, the site will feature a 2,700-foot quay and advanced electric cargo-handling equipment. By shifting away from diesel-powered machinery, developers intend to curb local emissions and noise while integrating the port into a regional network connected by major highways and Class I rail service.

Funding for the development includes $225 million from the terminal operator Enstructure, $325 million from the State of Delaware, and $119 million in federal grants. Officials expect the completed facility to serve as a high-efficiency gateway for the Northeast, leveraging its proximity to 120 million consumers within a 500-mile radius. Beyond the infrastructure itself, the project is framed as a long-term economic engine, projected to generate thousands of union jobs in construction and maritime logistics while bolstering the state's competitiveness in global trade.
