Hemlo Mining Navigates Electrical Outage at Ontario Gold Mine
An underground electrical substation failure on September 4 has forced Hemlo Mining Corp. to resequence operations at its namesake gold mine in Ontario. While the incident halted work in the Alimak production area on the 9765 level, the company confirmed that no injuries occurred and processing operations remain unaffected.
Technical teams have deployed a temporary electrical bypass system to restore partial power to the site, allowing specific activities to resume while development and exploration are curtailed. The company previously ordered a replacement substation for approximately US$250,000, with delivery anticipated for December 2026. In the interim, management is scouting for expedited procurement options and potential infrastructure relocation to restore full capacity.
CEO Jason Kosec noted that the mine’s extensive footprint provides sufficient operational flexibility to absorb the localized disruption. By shifting focus to other active areas and adjusting mine sequencing, the company aims to mitigate potential production deferrals. Processing plant operations continue without interruption, supported by the mine’s 300-kilometre development network.
