Manhattan’s Historic Diamond Exchange Reborn as Luxury Condominiums

Once the epicenter of the American diamond trade, the 1894 skyscraper at 14 Maiden Lane has shed its commercial past to house nine exclusive, full-floor residences. The conversion of this Financial District landmark preserves its signature architectural legacy while offering a quiet, boutique living experience in the heart of the city.

Designed by Gilbert A. Schellenger, the ten-story building was originally engineered with oversized bay windows to provide natural light for diamond merchants evaluating stones. Today, those same windows illuminate interiors featuring 12-foot-6-inch ceilings, European white oak chevron flooring, and kitchens equipped with Viking, Bosch, and Dacor appliances. Each of the nine residences spans approximately 1,300 square feet, offering two bedrooms and a flexible third room suited for a home office.

The property balances historic character with modern utility, opting for a lean amenities package—including a virtual doorman and dedicated storage—to maintain low carrying costs. In the lobby, a diamond-shaped chandelier salvaged from Harrods Buenos Aires serves as a nod to the building's storied history. With prices starting just under $2.6 million, the project aims to offer a rare combination of privacy and historic pedigree in a neighborhood dominated by larger, high-density developments.

According to Thomas Guss of NYR.com, the brokerage representing the property, the building’s unique design provides an unparalleled living environment downtown. The location offers immediate access to the Seaport and Wall Street, providing proximity to urban infrastructure while maintaining a distinct residential atmosphere. Private tours are currently available by appointment for prospective buyers.
