Miller Children’s Hospital Implements Growth-Adjustable Infant Stents
Two infants at Long Beach’s Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital have become the first at the facility to receive the Renata Minima Stent. This FDA-approved technology marks a shift in pediatric cardiology, offering a device that expands alongside a growing child to treat critical vascular and congenital heart conditions.

Traditional cardiac stents often fail to accommodate a child’s natural growth, frequently necessitating subsequent high-risk surgeries to replace the hardware. The Minima Stent addresses this limitation by allowing physicians to expand the device as the patient matures, effectively bridging the gap between neonatal intervention and adult-sized vascular development. The system is specifically calibrated for patients weighing as little as 1.5 kilograms.
Dr. Saar Danon, medical director of Pediatric Cardiology at the Children's Heart Institute, noted that this technology allows for earlier intervention in serious vascular cases while reducing the long-term surgical burden on the patient. The procedure is performed via a minimally invasive catheter-based approach, guided by advanced bi-plane imaging within the hospital’s dedicated cardiac catheterization laboratory. By restoring normal blood flow, the intervention aims to alleviate strain on the heart and support healthy development.
Dr. Cynthia Herrington, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the institute, emphasized that providing such specialized options locally is vital for families navigating the stress of a congenital diagnosis. Beyond the procedure, the hospital’s multidisciplinary team manages the full spectrum of care, from initial prenatal diagnosis to long-term follow-up in their specialized Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
