Pratt & Whitney Clears Key Design Hurdle for F-35 Engine Upgrade
Pratt & Whitney has successfully cleared the Risk Reduction Design Review for its F135 Engine Core Upgrade, marking a critical step in maturing the propulsion technology required for F-35 Block 4 capabilities. The milestone confirms the design's readiness to support advanced sensors and increased thermal management across the global fleet.
The East Hartford-based manufacturer evaluated propulsion technologies and integration requirements during the review, ensuring the engine can handle the power demands of next-generation weapons systems. This assessment also examined the industrial base's capacity to manage both new production and the retrofitting of existing aircraft. By building on the established F135 architecture, the upgrade aims to provide a cost-effective path for modernization without requiring a complete overhaul of current sustainment infrastructure.
Jill Albertelli, president of Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, noted that the successful review validates the maturity of the upgrade and keeps the program on its current trajectory. U.S. Navy Capt. Mitch Grant, the F-35 Propulsion Program Manager, emphasized that the collaboration between industry and government partners has been central to maintaining this schedule. With over 1,500 F135 engines currently in service across 20 nations, the company intends for the new core to function as a drop-in replacement, ensuring commonality across all three F-35 variants.
