Giggles pivots to short-form video as it climbs U.S. App Store charts
A surge in popularity has propelled social app Giggles into the top 50 on the U.S. App Store, coinciding with a total platform overhaul. Moving away from its original trading mechanics, the app now centers on community-driven video content supported by a new non-monetary interaction system called Aura.
The redesign replaces previous financial elements with Aura, a points-based economy designed solely for engagement and creator rewards. Users can also collect digital trend cards, which serve as commemorative markers for viral moments. This shift aims to recapture the platform’s original focus on creative expression across categories like comedy, sports, and music.
Behind the aesthetic changes, co-founders Justin Jin and Edwin Wang oversaw a comprehensive technical reconstruction. The update addresses persistent UI lag and server-side scaling issues while implementing a completely new moderation architecture. These improvements follow months of direct feedback from the platform’s user base.
While industry competitors move toward prediction markets and AI-driven content, the Giggles team is betting on a return to organic social interaction. The iOS version is currently available, with an Android launch scheduled before the fourth quarter of 2026.
