Why Grounded AI Is Only Half the Solution for Insurance Compliance

Grounded AI is frequently touted as the gold standard for automating insurance compliance, but Kristen Nunery, CEO of illumend, warns that anchoring systems to specific requirements is only half the battle. Without cross-document reasoning and human oversight, businesses risk falling into a trap of confident but incorrect decision-making.

For many organizations, the challenge of Certificate of Insurance (COI) compliance is not just reading documents, but understanding the intricate relationships between them. While grounded AI effectively anchors outputs to an organization's specific contracts and leases, it often fails to connect the dots between certificates, endorsements, schedules, and amendments. A system might correctly extract a policy number or coverage limit but still arrive at a flawed conclusion if it ignores how these documents interact under the governing agreement.

The Necessity of Traceable Reasoning

True compliance requires a complete body of evidence. Nunery argues that every AI-supported determination must be fully traceable, allowing reviewers to reconstruct the logic from the requirement to the specific document that satisfied it. Relying on an opaque confidence score is dangerous, particularly during audits or legal disputes where defensibility is paramount. Furthermore, human oversight remains a non-negotiable final step; a person should review and approve determinations to ensure that unusual policy language or unique exceptions are handled correctly. Buyers should assess platforms not just on their ability to extract data, but on their capacity to balance risk by measuring both false passes and false failures, ensuring that neither uncovered exposure nor unnecessary administrative friction undermines the process.
