3D Gaussian Splatting Transforms Media Production Pipelines

At IBC 2026, XGRIDS demonstrated a shift in virtual production by integrating 3D Gaussian Splatting directly into live broadcast and cinematic workflows. By bypassing traditional, time-consuming reconstruction, the company’s spatial scanning technology allows production teams to move physical locations into Unreal Engine environments with unprecedented speed.

The transition from physical site to digital asset now relies on hardware like the Lixel K2 scanner and PortalCam, which process spatial data through the Lixel CyberColor (LCC) system. Once rendered, these environments are imported into Unreal Engine via the LCC plugin, enabling creators to perform camera blocking, scene composition, and XR integration in real-time. This pipeline supports major industry platforms including Pixotope, Aximmetry, Disguise, and nDisplay, effectively turning one-off scans into reusable production assets.

Practical applications are already moving beyond demonstrations. VFX supervisor Amir Ovadia Steklov recently utilized PortalCam to capture a full spaceship set for cinematic VFX, while South Korea’s SBS network has integrated 3DGS technology into live news broadcasts. With the introduction of LCC Scan for iPhone, XGRIDS is further lowering the barrier to entry, allowing for on-device capture of objects and spaces. These developments suggest a future where high-fidelity spatial data functions as a standard component of creative production rather than a specialized post-processing task.
