Northern Sun Energy Breaks Ground on Swansea Solar Storage Projects

Construction has commenced on a pair of community solar installations in Swansea, Massachusetts, featuring 11.5 MW of generation capacity paired with 10 MWh of battery storage. Developed by GeoFire Solar, the projects utilize a DC-coupled architecture designed to minimize conversion losses and qualify for the state’s SMART 3.0 incentive program.

The integration of DC-coupled battery storage marks a technical shift from conventional AC systems. By keeping electricity in its original DC form from the panels through to the battery, the configuration requires only one conversion before hitting the grid. This reduction in conversion steps directly addresses the efficiency drop-offs common in standard multi-stage AC systems. To outfit the site, Northern Sun Energy selected ReneSola panels, APA fixed-tilt racking, and SMA inverters alongside Jinko battery configurations.

Securing these projects required intensive pre-construction coordination to satisfy local fire codes and safety mandates. According to Chris Balogh, vice president and cofounder of Northern Sun Energy, the firm engaged authorities having jurisdiction and third-party inspectors long before permit submission. This early-stage collaboration focused on finalizing Emergency Response Plans and site-specific hazard analyses to ensure compliance. Zach Grabill, president of GeoFire Solar, noted that this proactive approach to safety and logistics was critical in maintaining the project timeline.
