Commercial Real Estate Generates $610 Billion in Annual Economic Output
The operation and maintenance of U.S. commercial buildings serve as a massive economic engine, generating $609.9 billion in annual output. According to a new BOMA International study, this sector sustains 3.9 million jobs, proving that the daily management of office, retail, and industrial properties is a cornerstone of national financial health.

For every dollar spent on building operations, the economy gains $2.22 in direct, indirect, and induced activity. Data from the 2026 Market Study, conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder, highlights that $274.9 billion in operational expenditures contributes $344.4 billion to the national GDP while funneling $219.4 billion into personal earnings.
Beyond basic maintenance, the landscape is shifting as data centers redefine construction trends. In 2025, data centers captured 46% of private office construction spending, totaling $41.2 billion. Meanwhile, industrial construction remains robust; despite a 7.9% dip from the previous year, the $274.2 billion investment in warehouses and manufacturing facilities remains more than double 2020 levels. These investments extend across 79 markets in 38 states, ensuring that the economic ripple effect reaches far beyond major urban centers.
