Maryland American Water Promotes Vigilance During Source Water Protection Week
As the American Water Works Association marks its annual Source Water Protection Week from September 27 to October 3, Maryland American Water is emphasizing the necessity of local environmental stewardship to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the state’s drinking water supplies.

The utility, which serves approximately 32,000 residents in Maryland, maintains that protecting reservoirs, rivers, and aquifers is the most effective way to minimize treatment costs and mitigate pollution risks. Laura Runkle, President of Maryland American Water, noted that shielding these sources from contamination remains the primary defense in delivering clean water to the tap. The company’s internal program involves constant collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to monitor water quality and address potential emerging contaminants.
Beyond institutional efforts, the company is urging residents to adopt sustainable habits to prevent runoff pollution. Practical steps include avoiding the over-application of lawn chemicals, properly disposing of pharmaceuticals instead of flushing them, and ensuring that pet waste and hazardous materials like motor oil or paint do not enter storm drains. According to Thalika Hollingsworth, the company's Source Water Protection Program Manager, these daily individual choices are vital to preserving water quality for future generations. The company conducts nearly one million tests annually across its research facilities to ensure compliance with stringent safety standards.
