Novelis Targets Battery Market With Advanced Coated Aluminum
Novelis is scaling its portfolio of coated aluminum solutions to address the evolving demands of electric vehicle batteries and stationary energy storage. By applying proprietary surface technologies directly to high-performance automotive sheets, the company aims to streamline manufacturing processes while boosting the structural integrity and electrical insulation of critical battery components.

The expansion leverages the company's long-standing automotive supply chain expertise to solve common production bottlenecks. Manufacturers can now utilize aluminum coils treated with water-based coatings, a technology already active at the firm's German production facilities. This pre-applied layer remains intact during stamping, which eliminates the need for external lubricants and secondary e-coating steps, directly reducing both manufacturing complexity and overall costs.
These materials serve a wide array of battery hardware, including enclosures, casings, and electrical bus bars. Beyond production efficiency, the shift toward these specialized aluminum products aligns with broader industry goals for circularity. Using low-carbon, high-recycled-content metal allows manufacturers to lower their supply chain emissions. Milan Felberbaum, Director of R&D for Novelis Europe, noted that integrating these surface technologies allows for material properties to be tailored to specific performance requirements, ensuring durability in the high-stakes environment of electric mobility.
