Ben & Jerry's Commits $3 Million to Grassroots Democracy Initiative

Ben & Jerry's is funneling $3 million into the People's Action Institute to bankroll the Organizing Revival, a long-term project designed to bolster grassroots infrastructure across the U.S. The unrestricted grant marks a shift from short-term election cycle spending toward building durable community power to counter rising authoritarianism.

The investment targets the expansion of community training programs and leadership development, focusing on issues ranging from climate justice to housing access. By providing unrestricted capital, the ice cream company aims to give organizers the flexibility to address local challenges without being tethered to specific campaign outcomes or election deadlines. Carleen Pickard, the company's global social mission director, stated that the move reflects a belief that lasting progress originates from sustained, bottom-up organizing rather than top-down political mandates.

People's Action Institute, a network spanning 30 states with over a million members, will use the funds to scale a strategy they call Neighborhoods First. Executive Director Sulma Arias noted that the funding provides the necessary room to deepen the craft of community organizing, allowing the group to connect neighbors and foster local leadership. This partnership aligns with the institute's 2023 manifesto, The Antidote to Authoritarianism, which calls for deep, permanent investment in the groups already working on the front lines of social change.
