Otolaryngologists Converge in Los Angeles to Tackle ENT Innovation
More than 5,000 otolaryngologists will gather in Los Angeles from October 17–20 for the 2026 Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, an event designed to bridge the gap between emerging medical breakthroughs and the mounting economic pressures currently threatening the stability of specialized head and neck care.
The conference arrives at a critical juncture for the medical community. Beyond the clinical focus on gene therapy and hearing restoration, physicians face a volatile economic landscape, most notably the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' proposal to slash payments for specific same-day services by 50% starting in 2027. Rahul K. Shah, the Academy’s CEO, emphasized that these financial hurdles directly impede the ability of specialists to adopt new technologies. The event will serve as a platform to debate how to reconcile these policy constraints with the rapid evolution of patient treatment.
Scientific sessions will address six primary frontiers, ranging from the impact of GLP-1 medications on airway health and thyroid cancer risks to the integration of hearing health into broader cognitive aging strategies. Of particular note are clinical trials for gene therapies like AK-OTOF and DB-OTO, which aim to provide hearing restoration for children with profound genetic loss. Other sessions will scrutinize the systemic effects of hypoglossal nerve stimulation for sleep apnea and investigate the surprising correlations between eating disorders and salivary gland cancer. These discussions aim to provide a roadmap for navigating both the clinical complexities of modern ENT medicine and the administrative challenges of the coming year.
