MicroNuclear and INL Foundation Partner on Molten Salt Battery
A coalition led by MicroNuclear, LLC and the Idaho National Laboratory Foundation has formalized a partnership to advance the development of a compact molten salt microreactor. This 20-megawatt thermal unit aims to provide resilient, emissions-free power for critical infrastructure, industrial heat, and remote energy grids over a decade-long operational cycle.

The agreement marks a transition from conceptual design to active engineering, safety testing, and regulatory licensing. By leveraging a coalition that includes EXP, Premier Technology, and Porter House, the project intends to establish a repeatable manufacturing model. The primary focus involves accelerating technology maturation and securing the necessary pathways for government review and eventual commercial-scale deployment.
MicroNuclear CEO Paul Marotta noted that the team is now positioned to move the technology toward a disciplined testing and licensing phase. The battery is designed for natural circulation and enhanced security, with a specific focus on protection against cyber and physical threats. Once the ten-year fuel interval concludes, the unit is intended to return to a centralized facility for salt recovery and fuel recycling. While the INL Foundation will facilitate fundraising and access to national laboratory resources, actual testing will be governed by separate agreements with the U.S. Department of Energy.
