The Hidden Costs of Healthcare Gaps for U.S. Women

Fifty-one percent of women report negative healthcare experiences over the last five years, a reality that ripples far beyond the clinic. A new Gallup-Pivotal survey reveals that when women cannot access essential care, their careers, family dynamics, and community contributions suffer significant, measurable decline.

The study, conducted by Gallup in partnership with Melinda French Gates’ organization, Pivotal, underscores a systemic failure to meet women's health needs. While 42% of women report that their health has hindered their life goals, that number spikes dramatically among those who struggle to access medical care. Among women denied needed treatment, 79% report negative impacts on family life, and 66% see their professional lives hampered by health-related setbacks.

Disparities remain stark across demographic lines. While 22% of White women rate their physical health as fair or poor, that figure climbs to 35% for Black women and 28% for Hispanic women. Barriers to care are often compounded by financial strain—32% of women reported skipping or delaying treatment due to cost—and a pervasive lack of clear information. This is particularly evident in menopause care, where nearly half of symptomatic women remain undiagnosed, often relying on friends and family rather than medical professionals for guidance.

"When women cannot get the care, information and support they need, it limits their opportunity and their ability to live up to their full potential," said Melinda French Gates. The data highlights a cycle of neglect: symptoms are dismissed, diagnoses are delayed, and the resulting instability forces women to scale back their participation in the workforce and their communities. Despite these challenges, public sentiment reflects a clear mandate for change, with 60% of Americans identifying the improvement of women’s health as a top priority for government action.
