Morocco Launches First Large-Scale Industrial Battery Storage System
A 25 MW, 125 MWh lithium iron phosphate battery system is now live at OCP’s Benguerir mining site, marking Morocco’s first major venture into industrial-scale energy storage. The project, commissioned by Envision Energy, aims to stabilize power supply by shifting solar generation to meet peak industrial demand.

The system acts as a long-duration energy management tool, offering five hours of storage capacity to bridge the gap between daytime solar production and evening consumption. By optimizing this load, OCP expects to cut peak-hour electricity costs by approximately 25%. The project is backed by USD 20 million from the Clean Technology Fund, managed through the African Development Bank Group, and is engineered for a 25-year service life.
John Lee, General Manager of Envision Energy for the Middle East and Africa, described the system as a blueprint for renewable-plus-storage integration in industrial settings. OCP Green Energy CEO Omar Kadir noted that the storage capacity allows the company to align the variable nature of renewable energy with the continuous requirements of mining operations. This installation serves as a critical step toward Morocco’s goal of sourcing 52% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, providing a scalable model for decarbonization efforts across the African continent.
