Purina’s Petivity Launches AI-Powered Smart Feeder for Cats

The Smart Feeder, developed by Purina-backed Petivity, aims to shift cat care from reactive to proactive monitoring. Using a built-in camera and sensors, the device learns the individual habits of up to five cats in a single household. It tracks portion sizes, frequency of meals, and eating patterns to provide owners with actionable health insights. According to product development lead Kristin Slater, this data is critical for addressing preventable issues like obesity, which often stems from owners lacking visibility into their pets’ actual intake.

To ensure accuracy, Purina’s data scientists trained the feeder’s AI on more than 21,000 feeding sessions and 1,400 hours of video. The system is designed to distinguish between individual cats and detect subtle behavioral shifts that might indicate underlying health problems. The unit also features a shallow bowl to prevent whisker fatigue and is compatible with the existing Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor, allowing for a comprehensive view of a pet's health metrics. Currently retailing for $149.99, the device is available through Amazon, Chewy, and the company's website. The upcoming New York event will connect the public to adoptable cats at the Atlanta Humane Society, the Cat Adoption Team in Oregon, and Chicago’s Tree House Humane Society.
