AHN Recruits UPMC Leader Matthew Holtzman to Spearhead Western Surgery
Allegheny Health Network has appointed surgical oncologist Dr. Matthew Holtzman as its new Chief Surgical Officer for the western region. Starting in March 2027, Holtzman will oversee surgical operations and business development across the network's recently acquired Heritage Valley facilities in Beaver and western Allegheny counties.
Dr. Holtzman transitions to AHN after a long tenure at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC, where he held several key leadership titles, including president of the UPMC Shadyside medical staff. His new role carries a dual mandate: directing regional surgical strategy and serving as the Surgical Oncology Business Development and Community Relations Leader. This appointment reflects AHN’s broader push to integrate its newly acquired hospitals into a cohesive network while elevating its oncology profile.
Dr. David Bartlett, director of the AHN Cancer Center, noted that Holtzman’s background in managing complex surgical programs will be instrumental in expanding regional care capabilities. A board-certified specialist in gastrointestinal malignancies, Holtzman brings over two decades of clinical and academic experience to the system. His work will focus on scaling advanced surgical services and fostering physician alignment within the Heritage Valley footprint, aiming to provide western Pennsylvania patients with broader access to specialized cancer treatments.
