Microsoft Ups Prices for Refreshed Surface Pro and Laptop Lineup
A 44 percent price hike greets the latest Surface Pro and Laptop models as Microsoft transitions to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus silicon. Debuting October 13, the hardware ditches entry-level configurations for a 16GB RAM floor, pushing the starting costs of the 12-inch tablet and 13-inch laptop well past the thousand-dollar mark.
The Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition now starts at $1,149.99, a significant jump from the $799.99 entry point of its predecessor. Similarly, the 13-inch Surface Laptop has climbed to $1,199.99, up from last year’s $899.99. By eliminating the 8GB RAM option, Microsoft forces consumers into higher-tier memory configurations that top out at 24GB.
Beyond the cost, the shift to the six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chip promises measurable gains in efficiency and power. Microsoft claims the updated NPU delivers 95 percent faster local AI inferencing and 60 percent faster graphics performance compared to previous iterations. These internal improvements translate to tangible battery life gains: the Surface Pro now offers up to 13 hours of web browsing, while the Surface Laptop reaches 18 hours. Despite these changes under the hood, the external hardware remains largely unchanged, featuring the same 2196 x 1464 LCD displays found in last year’s models.
