FDA Advisory Panel Backs GRAIL's Multi-Cancer Detection Test
An FDA advisory committee has voted in favor of the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test, marking a significant step toward potential regulatory approval. The panel concluded that the benefits of the test, which identifies cancer-specific methylation patterns in adults aged 50 and older, outweigh its associated risks.

The Molecular and Clinical Genetics Devices Panel reached its decision through three separate votes. Members ruled seven to two, with one abstention, that the test’s benefits exceed its risks, while providing a unanimous endorsement of its safety. A six-to-four vote supported the effectiveness of the platform, which is designed to complement existing cancer screening guidelines rather than replace them.
GRAIL CEO Josh Ofman stated that the recommendation validates the clinical evidence established by the company’s large-scale studies, including the PATHFINDER 2 and NHS-Galleri trials. The test detects signals from multiple cancer types before symptoms manifest and provides information on the origin of the cancer signal to assist clinicians. While the FDA is not required to follow the committee’s guidance, the agency will weigh these findings as it completes its final review of the Premarket Approval application in the coming months.
