Meizhou Island pivots from pilgrimage site to leisure destination

For decades, pilgrims flocked to Fujian’s Meizhou Island solely to honor Mazu, the legendary goddess of the sea, often departing within hours of their arrival. Now, local administrators are successfully pivoting, leveraging the island’s cultural heritage and coastal geography to transform a brief religious stopover into a multi-day vacation experience.

The shift away from rapid-turnover tourism is reflected in recent visitor data. In 2025, the island welcomed 3.23 million tourists, crossing the 3-million threshold for the first time. Officials credit this growth to a deliberate expansion of activities that move beyond the traditional temple visit, focusing instead on immersive engagement with the island’s history and natural scenery.

Visitors are increasingly participating in slow tourism, with family groups and younger travelers driving the surge. Popular new offerings include traditional attire photoshoots, guided tours of the Mazu Heritage Park, and evening cultural performances that utilize AR technology. By integrating these experiences with the island’s existing landmarks, such as the Ping'an Pagoda and the Mazu cultural museum, the administrative committee has effectively extended the average length of stay, turning the birthplace of the sea goddess into a comprehensive coastal retreat.
