Imperial College London migrates to Canvas for unified digital learning
More than 28,000 students and staff at Imperial College London have migrated to a single virtual learning environment, as the institution replaces its fragmented legacy systems with the Canvas platform. This 10-month transition aims to standardize digital education across the university’s diverse science, engineering, and business faculties.
The university’s Digital Education Platform Project managed the massive consolidation, which involved merging nearly 100 separate integrations into one centralized hub. By moving away from multiple disparate tools, Imperial aims to enhance accessibility through built-in features like screen reader compatibility and customizable interface settings, ensuring equitable engagement for all users.
Professor Alan Spivey, Vice Provost for Education and Student Experience, stated that the move strengthens the digital foundations required to support world-class teaching at scale. For the institution, the shift is less about adopting new software and more about creating a reliable, intuitive ecosystem that reflects its ambition to prepare students for a rapidly changing professional landscape. Instructure, the maker of Canvas, noted that this consolidation streamlines internal workflows and staff training while preserving the necessary flexibility for unique departmental requirements.
