Established in 2013 by Mike Arms, the movement emerged as a response to the grim reality that over a million pets lose their lives annually in the United States alone. What began as a singular call to action has evolved into a massive digital coalition involving more than 1,000 welfare organizations. Participants are encouraged to share rescue stories online using the hashtag #ShineALight to amplify the visibility of shelter animals.

This year, actor and activist Alicia Silverstone serves as the lead luminary for the campaign. Known for her advocacy in animal rights and plant-based living, Silverstone joins a growing roster of public figures—including Bob Odenkirk, Alan Tudyk, and various professional athletes—who are leveraging their platforms to emphasize that rescue pets are worthy of forever homes. The campaign continues to gain momentum, consistently trending on major social platforms as it attempts to turn public awareness into tangible adoption rates.
