CenterPoint Energy Secures $50 Million DOE Grant for Houston Grid
A $50 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will enable CenterPoint Energy to overhaul its substation infrastructure in the Greater Houston area. The funding, awarded through the SPARK program, targets the deployment of advanced technology designed to stabilize the grid and manage rising electricity demand.
The project positions CenterPoint Energy among the first U.S. utilities to integrate specialized grid-stabilizing technology from Siemens Energy. This hardware is engineered to react dynamically to fluctuations in power consumption, providing a buffer against outages and supporting the region’s rapid economic expansion. Beyond technical upgrades, the initiative is projected to generate over 500 local jobs dedicated to construction and installation.
Katie Jereza, Assistant Secretary for the DOE’s Office of Electricity, noted that the investment aims to bolster reliability for one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. Jason Ryan, Executive Vice President at CenterPoint, described the grant as a critical step in building a resilient coastal grid for the utility's 2.9 million local customers. Texas Public Utility Commissioner Kathleen Jackson added that the improvements will provide long-term benefits to the broader state energy system, reinforcing infrastructure that supports millions of residents.
