Nanexa and Novo Nordisk ink 1.165 billion euro drug delivery deal
A potential 1.165 billion euro windfall awaits Swedish biotech firm Nanexa after securing a global licensing deal with Novo Nordisk. The agreement grants the pharmaceutical giant exclusive access to Nanexa’s PharmaShell technology, targeting the development of long-acting injectable treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Under the terms finalized in Uppsala, Novo Nordisk will leverage Nanexa’s atomic layer deposition platform to develop up to five peptide-based drug programs. These efforts aim to transition standard treatments into monthly or quarterly injection profiles. The financial package includes 615 million euros in upfront payments alongside regulatory and development milestones, topped by low single-digit royalties on future commercial sales.
Nanexa CEO David Westberg framed the partnership as a validation of the PharmaShell technology, which utilizes ultra-thin inorganic coatings on drug particles to manage release rates. The company intends to use the influx of capital to expand its platform into new therapeutic areas and push internal projects further toward clinical proof of concept. Chairman Göran Ando noted the deal marks a shift toward greater financial independence, enabling the firm to retain more value in future development cycles before seeking additional partners.
