Tau Motors Showcases Software-Defined Power at Climate Week NYC
At Climate Week NYC 2026, Tau Motors and the Columbia Center of Advanced Electrification unveiled 19 technical papers centered on software-defined power. The research, presented during the IEEE/CCAE Symposium, details how integrating electric machine design with advanced firmware can reduce material dependencies and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems.

Tau CEO Wesley Pennington and Chief Scientist Matthias Preindl led a fireside chat at Columbia University to discuss the "electro-industrial stack." Their discussion focused on the necessity of designing power electronics, electric machines, and software as a unified system rather than disparate components. This architectural shift aims to improve performance across mobility, industrial equipment, and data center infrastructure.
The presented papers underscore the technical foundation of Tau’s Ion and Gamma platforms. The Ion platform utilizes modular electronics and software libraries to streamline energy infrastructure deployment, while the Gamma platform targets rare-earth-free motion. By fostering collaboration between academic research and industrial application, the partnership seeks to lower costs and stabilize supply chains for manufacturers. The symposium also hosted representatives from GM Energy and Siemens, highlighting the industry-wide push to solve reliability challenges in large-scale electrification.
